Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndrome (MEN)
Some time there is more than one endocrine organ involvement by the tumour. Same is true in Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndrome where a number of endocrine glands can be involved. They can be of two types:
MEN 1 Syndrome:- Characterised by
- Hyperparathyroidism (>95%)
- Pancreatic/Duodenal Neuroendocrine Tumour (50-75%)
- Pituitary Tumours (30-55%)
MEN 2a:-
- Medullary carcinoma thyroid (100%)
- Pheochromocytoma(50%)
- Parathyroid hyperplasia (10-30%)
MEN 2b:-
- Medullary carcinoma thyroid (100%)
- Pheochromocytoma(50%)
Genetic testing and screening of family members is important to detect these tumours early, so as to prevent the complications.
